here he is. Welcome to the family Sam!

I made sure to get permission to do this!! Here is Samuel. He is SO beautiful.
He had low blood sugar last night so the nurses had him which was good for Jessie because she was able to get some rest. He is doing fine now and possibly will be able to go home tomorrow! Jessie is doing well too. Elsie was going to meet him today. I wish I could have seen her face. It is always a special moment when the siblings get introduced to eachother.

He has more hair than his sister at the moment. Elsie may not like that. Just beautiful!!

Martin Luther King lesson

We've been learning a great deal about Martin Luther King Jr over the past few days. We listened to the "I Have a Dream Speech" and learned a lot about his life and what he lived for. I remembered a lesson that I learned about a few years ago in an Education course about crayons and found it online. Here, our crayons are having a conversation.
Our "bulletin board" about getting along with others. The poem reads:

While walking in a toy store
the day before today,
I overheard a crayon box
with many things to say.

"I don't like red!" said yellow.
And green said, "Nor do I!"
And no one here likes orange,
but no one knows quite why."

"We are a box of crayons
that really doesn't get along,"
said blue to all the others
"something here is wrong!"

Well, I bought that box of crayons
and took it home with me
and laid out all the crayons
so the crayons could all see.

They watched me as I colored
with red and blue and green
and black and white and orange
and every color in between.

They watched as green
became the grass
adn blue becamse the sky.
The yello sun was shining bright
on white clouds drifting by.

Colors changed as they touched,
becoming something new.
They watched me as I colored.
They watched till I was through.

And when I'd finally finished,
I began to walk away.
And as I did the crayon box
had something more to say...

"I do like red!" said yellow
and green said, "So do I!"
"And blue you are terrific
so high up in tne sky."

"We are a box of crayons
each of us unique,
but when we get together
the picture is complete."

by Shane DeRolf

Not sure who wrote this but this is given after-

Wouldn't it be terrible?
Wouldn't it be sad?
If just one single color
was the color that we had?

If everything was purple
or red, or blue or green?
If yellow, pink or orange
was all that could be seen?

Can you just imagine
how dull our world would be
If just one single color
was all we got to see?

Happy Day!!

Samuel Donald has arrived as another early bird!

Not sure about the spelling but Jessie and Matt welcomed their little boy into the world today at about 6:40. Samuel Donald 7lbs. 4 oz. They are both healthy and doing fine. He is 4 weeks early and Jessie had some complications throughout so we pray that they continue to stay healthy. Congratulations D. family!! Now we're waiting on me!!!

Somebody got an award!

Josie got an award because she did some really tough math all by herself. I couldn't believe it. In fact I thougth she did it wrong at first so I went over it with her and to my surprise every answer was right. It wasn't rocket science or anything but it impressed me so she got an award!
CONGRATULATIONS JOSIE!
She was so embarassed at first :)

who's the dunce

As I've mentioned before we are learning about the Colonial period of American History. It has been interesting for the kids to learn about one room school houses and have a field trip idea in our near future now. One of the things they found sort of funny was the dunce-cap punishement.
Ours is an exceptionally long and high dunce-cap but it serves its purpose.

Don't miss a spelling word Friday Georgia or you will don the cap!!

Badminton and Balancing

Here are the girls balancing at "Dad's school", one of their favorite things to do while visiting.
Daddy always gets out the goods for his girls. (Emmy took this picture right before she ran over an tumbled all of their hard work.)

Emeline LOVED trying to hit anything with her racquet.

It was a lesson in badminton this week. Fun fun fun.

The girls really stunk, but we had fun anyway!! :)

Silhouette Art

We have moved on to the Colonial period of American History and we learned that silhouette portraits were common forms of art during this time. We gave it a try.
I'll keep you posted as to how they turn out. I did manage to get Emeline's profile as well - just wasn't quick enough to snap a picture of her before she jumped down. It was comical I would tell her to look at me as I knelt down in front of her and every time I took the crayon to the paper her head would turn to look. This happened oh, about 25 times... BUT we got it!!

snapshots of Emeline

Emeline has been a Daddy's girl lately. She is usually a mommy's girl but since Dad had vacation and a snow day yesterday she hasn't let him stop playing with her. Here she thinks she is big because she has a head band on.
Big sister Georgia taught Emmy how to catch and she actually was doing it much to our surprise.

All I heard was "Look at me ma."

eye experiments

We had some fun learning about the eye today. The girls loved doing some eye experiments.
Well, all of them except Josie who had a hard time getting them to work. Emmy kept saying "I did it" further tormenting Josie to pieces.
Above are a couple examples.
The first, you look at the plus sign on the right with your right eye covered. Move closer to the image and the circle amongst the lines will fill in.
The second one finds your blind spot, you look at the image on the right while closing your right eye. Gradually move closer until the image on the right disappears. Georgia was amazed and was simply giddy over it.

Our Epiphany

One last gift of the holiday season. This one is for Jesus. We have decided as a family to give Jesus our ...

The girls very reverently sprinkled holy water for me.

Finally we had kings cake. I hid a piece of candy cane (also a symbol of Jesus) in the cake. We made the agreement that whoever got the candy cane would be king or queen for the day. Stinky ol' dad got it! I have never seen cake eaten so fast. They all were so anxious to see who had the prize.

Four calling birds = Four gospels
Five golden rings = The Torah the first five books of the Old Testament
Six geese a-laying = Six days of creation
Seven swans a-swimming = Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit

Eight maids a-milking = Eight beatitudes
Nine ladies dancing = Nine fruits of the spirit

Ten lords a-leaping = Ten Commandments

New glasses to start the new year.

Happy New Year!

The kids gave it another go this year. This is them at about 9:30!! I noticed they were starting to drift off early (dad included) so we decided to do an early toast for those that may not make it to 12:00.
We got out our champagne glasses and sparkling apple / cranberry juice and Em just kept downing it and saying "Murr mom, mur". BAD sign!

This past week at the "library program they made wacky hats to wear for new years. They put those on and...
...we had a proper toast. There is Em downing hers a little early.
Cheers everyone! To all a healthy and prosperous New Year!!
